21-22NOV19: Fritsche

Today we honor US Army Staff Sergeant William R. Fritsche, an amazing Solider and human being that I had the honor of serving with while stationed at The Old Guard @ Ft. Myer, Virginia (Arlington National Cemetery).

SSgt. Fritsche was assigned to 1st Squadron, 91st Cavalry Regiment, 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Vicenza, Italy; died July 27, 2007 near Kamu, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small-arms fire during combat operations. Also killed was Maj. Thomas G. Bostick Jr. He was 23. He was born Feb. 10, 1984, in Danville, and was a son of Volitta (Miller) Fritsche of Martinsville and the late William W. Fritsche. He married Brandi N. Evans on Sept. 16, 2006, and she survives.

SSG Fritsche was a 2002 graduate of Martinsville High School, where he played varsity basketball. He had also played football during his freshman year. He enjoyed playing basketball, riding 4-wheelers, listening to country music, and playing golf. He joined the Army in 2002, soon after graduating, and was promoted to sergeant in April 2005. He was selected in 2005 to be part of President Bush’s inaugural procession in Washington, D.C., as a member of the Old Guard, the Army’s oldest active-duty infantry unit. His primary role in Bravo Company was as a team leader and squad leader in a casket platoon, which means he was responsible for the casket carries and flag folding for hundreds of military funerals at Arlington.
